The project-
You will truly unleash your creativity, crafting a variety of unique items.
Clear your mind of expectations, as this approach to seascapes is likely not what you imagine.
Samples include hexagon wall art, mini journals, 3d art and more.
What do I need to bring?
Before you read- don't panic. The list is broad and if you don't have all the materials we bring a pop up-shop, but also we have several large boxes of stuff to share with you. Just bring what you have, you can also share with each other, so just pack it all in.
Sewing machine- with a variety of feet, open toe foot, walking foot, applique foot- just bring what you have we will make it work ( a number of machines are available to borrow)
Board, cutter, ruler, regular scissors, small embroidery scissors, pins, hand needle- all your regular sewing kit.
Glue pen, glue gun (if you have one) Basting spray ( I will have plenty of cans)
Fabrics- long quarters, fat quarter, half metres, interesting fabrics, organza's, lace, sheers, silks, anything that you think you can add in. Colours of the sea, that you like, bring larger pieces as well as scrappy pieces. I will add some pictures at the end.
Embellishments- ribbon, wool, fluffy wool, ribbon, lace etc....
If you have access to a beach some beachcombing for sea glass, driftwood, bits of net etc.. would also be useful. If this is not a possibility then you can just do a bit of gathering on the local beach outside the hotel, and we will have done some gathering in advance for you to use.
Threads, bring what you have in sea scape colours.
To make a 3 d picture- you will need a 3 d frame as pictured above, you can get these in IKEA- I would recommend getting a few as you will want to do more.
The hexagon frames work the best, last year people brought square and rectangle frames and they looked amazing but are harder to mount the work on- ill add a gallery at the end. Try the Range or Amazon for the hexagon frames.
Don't worry about how much stuff you have, we have a big room to work in .
Other items to bring and points to note.
- If you have a small dustpan and brush, please bring to tidy your station after sewing, also a bag to keep rubbish will be useful
- Extension lead.
- Snacks....don't forget the snacks.
- Headphones if you wish to listen to music ( This might sound odd, but if people play music while sewing there may be someone in the room with auditory sensory issues and are too embarrassed to say anything, this has happened before at a retreat so we recommend earphones to solve this issue)
- Comfy clothes and we don't mind if you want to wear slippers for sewing, we want you all to be comfortable.
- Please do not bring your own iron, there will be irons set up around the room for you to use. Irons draw on the electricity so we need to limit the amount that we have plugged in, so the sewing machines can be used efficiently.
Finally the hotel is amazing and the Island is a very special place- the hotel has a lot of original features so bear that in mind. The food is fabulous and they have an extensive menu to choose from. If you wish to go elsewhere for dinner, there are some lovely restaurants in Cahersiveen which is about 20 minutes drive away.
We ran this workshop last year and it was a huge success. See below some of the work that was produced.
